African mythology is full of glorious Black goddesses who boast red as their symbolic color. Sekhmet, the Egyptian lioness goddess of fire, personifies passion, strength, beauty and power. She destroys that which is old to clear the way for the new. Oya, warrior goddess of the Yoruba, represents transformation and controls the elements of wind, rain and storms. Her power over the elements helps to wash away debris and purify the earth. And there are many more ladies in red.
