This is fantastic information! This Brother is absolutely on point as he reveals how Black people had the audacity to honor our own people that were brutalized to death in Charleston, South Carolina! Our ancestors, Black Union Soldiers, died in anguish at that prison simply because they assisted in the liberation of Black people that were enslaved primarily in the South during the colonial period of North America. May we continue to celebrate them as the true heroes of Black People and the United States of America in general!

Martyrs of the Racecourse

Honoring our ancestors who laid down their lives so that their people will not be slave and have a better life. We are surely standing on the shoulders of giants.

What a powerful lesson that the First Memorial Day was started by Black people. This action shows that we are a special people. The Union soldiers were disinterred (to remove a dead body from a grave) and reburied. The Black community took responsibility for them over the course of 10 days. They properly reburied the soldiers in individual graves, build a whitewashed fence around the site, and erected an archway at the entrance labeled "Martyrs of the Racecourse."

The Black community spent an all-day celebration of freedom, remembrance, and unity. It began with a massive procession and ended with picnics, speeches, and military drills.

The Black Children marched out onto the racecourse track. They carried armfuls of roses, lilacs, and spring flowers in putting flowers on every single grave.

Black ministers led the throng in singing traditional spirituals, reading scripture, and offering prayers.

Military Drills: The Black Union soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts, 35th United States Colored Troops (USCT), and 104th USCT marched onto the field.

This was the day of remembering the "Martyrs of the Racecourse."
